Memorial Day At Lake Norman

American Flag Flying

Memorial Day at Lake Norman, always a great time and always so much to do.  The lake will be filled with boaters out enjoying the long weekend.  There will be many backyard cookouts and celebrations.  And, on Memorial Day weekend, Charlotte is home to one of the world’s biggest motorsports events, the Coca-Cola 600.  Yes, Lake Norman is a great place to be for Memorial Day.  Like many of you, I will also enjoy being out on the lake, partaking in a cookout or two, and watching lots of racing.  Although I am more partial to the Monaco Grand Prix and the Indy 500.  But that’s what makes America great, we have all of these great things to do and we are free to choose what we want to do to enjoy ourselves on a holiday weekend like Memorial Day.  But we also have to remember the reason we’re able to have the freedoms to do these wonderful things, because of the men and women who sacrificed their lives serving our great country.  So, while you’re enjoying yourself with friends and family this weekend on the lake, keep in mind the real reason for Memorial Day.

For those of you who would also like to attend, or participate in, more traditional Memorial Day ceremonies, here are some events happening around the lake this weekend.

Davidson

Town leaders are asking folks to gather at Mimosa Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 27 to place flags at graves in three town cemeteries.

Mooresville

Beginning on Friday, May 26, and lasting through Memorial Day weekend, the Mooresville/Lake Norman Exchange Club will host its second annual Field of Honor display of U.S. flags on the fields of the Lowe’s YMCA.

This formation will include hundreds of U.S. flags posted in a solemn formation as a tribute to those who have served or are now serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Individuals may sponsor flags to honor active duty military and veterans and especially those who have sacrificed their lives in service to their country.

Sponsors will retain the flags at the close of the event to be displayed in Mooresville and surrounding communities as continuing mementos of service.

Funds raised through the Field of Honor event benefit programs of the Mooresville/Lake Norman Exchange Club.

Event organizers call the event one “not to be missed” and say “the panorama of red, white and blue is hard to adequately describe, but once experienced it is not to be forgotten.”

There is no charge to visit the Field of Honor display, and all are invited to walk through the rows of flags.
