Although the Lake Norman area is rather large in size, it is actually a collection of small towns that surround the lake. Each town offers something different and between all of them there is something for most everyone. Below is a brief description of each of them.
Cornelius - On the southeast corner of the lake between Davidson to the north and Huntersville to the south. Cornelius is highly developed with many waterfront homes, condos, and townhomes in a variety of neighborhoods including The Peninsula, which is both a waterfront and golf course community. Cornelius has numerous dining and shopping choices and is only minutes from popular Birkdale Village. Charlotte is only a short drive via I-77.
Davidson - On the east side of the lake, between Cornelius to the south and Mooresville to the north, and is the northernmost town in Mecklenburg County. Davidson is the quentisential historic small town and is home to Davidson College. Take a stroll down scenic main street Davidson and you'll find many popular dining spots including the historic Soda Shop and the award winning Kindred restaurant. Davidson offers Lake Norman waterfront condos and townhomes at Davidson Landing and waterfront homes on Lake Davidson.
Mooresville - On the east and northeast side of the lake between Davidson to the south and Troutman to the north. Mooresville is the largest in area of the towns around the lake with the most waterfront homes. There are several popular waterfront neighborhoods in Mooresville including The Point, home to Trump National Charlotte, but you'll also find numerous waterfront homes that are not in a neighborhood and therefore do not have an HOA. Although Mooresville is the largest in area of the nearby towns, downtown Mooresville has very much a small town feel. Throughout greater Mooresville you'll find many shopping and dining choices. Mooresville is also home to Lowes corporate headquarters and home to numerous NASCAR teams and racing related businesses.
Denver - On the west side of the lake between Stanley to the south and Sherrills Ford to the north. Denver has often been referred to as the quieter side of the lake but recent development has produced an increase in dining and shopping options. In Denver you'll find the Sailview, Governors Island, and Westport neighborhoods. Denver is an easy commute to Charlotte via Hwy 16.
Sherrills Ford - On the northwest side of the lake between Denver to the south and Troutman to the east. Sherrills Ford is a less developed quieter and more rural area. It is, however, home to the beautiful Northview Harbour, a large neighborhood with amenities and nicer waterfront and off-water homes. There are also a number of other waterfront homes in Sherrills Ford so if you're looking for peace and quite away from the hustle and bustle then this could be the area for you.
Troutman - On the north side of the lake between Sherrills Ford to the west and Mooresville to the south. Troutman is a quieter area but has a many waterfront homes. While a more rural feel, Troutman is close to all of the shopping and dining that Mooresville has to offer and Troutman is home to popular Lake Norman State Park. Troutman is just minutes to Statesville and close to Interstates 77 & 40.
Huntersville - On the south side of the lake between Cornelius to the northeast and Stanley to the west. Huntersville is limited in waterfront shoreline on Lake Norman but there are waterfront homes here. Waterfront homes here are close to Birkdale Village and I-77. The Cowans Ford Dam is on the western edge of the Huntersville waterfront area.
Stanley - On the southwest side of the lake between Huntersville to the east and Denver to the north. There is only a small selection of waterfront homes in Stanely as it has a limited amount of shoreline on Lake Norman. Stanely is close to Charlotte though via Hwy 16 and is home to Cowans Ford Country Club.
Terrell - On the northern side of the lake with Sherrills Ford to the north and Mooresville to the east. Terrell is a small community along Hwy 150 that is mostly waterfront homes. Because of this there is virtually no shopping or dining within the Terrell community but Mooresville is only minutes away.
Statesville - On the northern most part of the lake north of Troutman. Statesville is a larger town/smaller city that is generally not part of the Lake Norman area. It does, however, have a small bit of shoreline on the lake with waterfront homes, which includes the unique Windemere Island. Statesville's location at the junction of Interstates 77 & 40 gives it easy access to other parts of the state.
